Synopsis
How to be happy without being alone
Thirtysomethings Linda, Radim, Tonda, Otakar, Dagmara and Silvie have been friends since they met as teenagers. All of them arrived in the big city, Prague, from their small home town. The euphoric dreams each had for themselves have not materialized and they are all starting to feel trapped in different ways. They all seem to know ont thing: what they don’t want in life. At a party back in their home town they reminisce over one of their dreams: to buy a farm, live together and, most importantly, have fun with their lives. In the weeks that follow, each of them is faced with a crisis that brings this old dream into sharper, more sober focus. Can they make it a working reality? Do they really want to?

About the film
The film Dreamers was shot in Věra Chytilová’s workshop at the Department of Directing. It was produced by Negativ and it was created in cooperation with Czech Television and FAMU. During her studies at FAMU, director Jitka Rudolfová received an offer to cooperate with Negativ producers, which led her to develop her idea of her graduation film into a feature film. From the beginning of her studies at FAMU, Rudolfová regularly won various prizes for her student films. In the Czech Republic, she won the most prestigious awards: her film Marta a Berta 26 (Marta and Berta 26) won at Famufest, where her film Lucie už je v posteli (Lucie is already in bed) previously won in the documentary film category. Her film Svatyně (Holiest of the Holiest) was awarded at the international Fresh Film Fest.
Rudolfova began writing the plot to the film Dreamers, which was originally titled “Life evaluations of thirty-something-year-olds” in her fourth year at FAMU. “I was curious why people do certain hopeless things in their lives – and can’t fight it at the moment; they only realize their pointlessness and awkwardness when looking back. The question was – is there a way out and what is it? The title of the film – Dreamers – was meant to be more of an exaggeration, the desperation of individual characters seems very natural. It could have been a story of most of us,” says Rudolfová.
